dog lover

I grew up in a house with dogs. I can’t ever remember a time when we didn’t have a dog as a pet. From Porky the basset house/German shepherd mix, to Brandy the Brittany Spaniel, to Penny the dachshund…I am a dog lover.

100 1801When my husband and I got married, I already had a little dachshund named Penny. After she left us, we decided a family dog was in order, and decided to get our lab, Bailey. She’s been a wonderful family pet, but a few years ago, I got the dachshund itch again. Those of you who have a doxie will know that once you get one…you’ll always love them. I didn’t want a puppy, so after looking around, my husband and I decided that a rescue dog would be the best fit for our family. Thanks to FLDR.org, also known as Florida Daschshund Rescue, Lola entered our lives in 2004.

I can’t say enough good things about the people at FLDR. Lola (she was then known by the name Wonder) was being fostered in the panhandle and I was able to talk with her “foster mom” at length about her needs and how she’d fit into our family of 3 kids and a big dog. FLDR also sent someone to our house to make sure we knew the special requirements of the breed and taking in a rescue dog. They transported Lola to Orlando, where she was spayed, received a dental, and had shots, and we picked her up. The fee for all of this? Only $250. It’s really an amazing organization, and if you’re considering adding a dog to your life, check out Florida Daschshund Rescue - you won’t be sorry!

Great story. The Doxie thing…same thing with Beagles. I knew when we got Buster, and I met his cartoon character personality, I’d be hooked. He was also a rescue, back around 2004! :) Good year for rescues! Our Gracie is a rescue from 2002.

Aw, I didn’t know cute little Lola was a rescue dog :) it’s amazing how many dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, and other animals are really out there for adoption at any given time and people just don’t realize it!

I always had dogs while growing up too. But I haven’t had one since college - first they weren’t allowed in the dorm room LOL then when I got married we lived in an apt. Now we live in a house with no yard. I’m like you - I want a lab (had one when I was a kid and LOVED him) and a smaller (inside) dog. I tried to get one from our rescue place here but none from the litter of 8 were available! I’ll keep looking….Great story.

Always a great idea. We always had pets growing up, but I haven’t had a dog for a while. Hopefully soon!

I know that my old Buddy will leave me soon, and I mourn him already. He was a rescue dog and suffered severe bone and joint damage from early abuse. I’m sure another rescue dog will someday fill the hole his passing will leave in my heart, but right now I just can’t imagine it.

Bravo for FLDR and all the other organizations that do right by neglected and abused animals of all sorts!

I’m so glad to see people getting dogs from rescue groups. My wife and I foster dogs for Heaven Can Wait Sanctuary, a local rescue group. My rescued Akita passed away in 2005 and I still miss her. BUT I have since then rescued an English Bulldog (Petunia) and a Shiba Inu (Suki). In addition to my rescued doxie, Angus and rescued Peke, Toy.
